Language of the Birds makes dresses and, to be totally candid, tops. We love bold narrative prints and unusual silhouettes. We believe clothing for women should be made in the spirit of our creative, savvy and ruthless selves. The collection is effortless, modern and unconventional. Buy something you truly love and then wear it forever. See our press.
We design our prints. Bespoke textile design is our raison d'être. We focus on silk-screened, vat dyed textiles in exclusive limited run prints. We also collaborate with designers, friends and heroes; who are often one in the same. Every print tells a story. Read our print stories.
Designer Tsia Carson went to Oahu to visit old friends. A born and bred New Yorker, she thought this would be a quick trip to paradise. Then she realized Honolulu was home. And finally the holomu'u, muʻumuʻu and kappogis she had worn for years were no longer out of place. However she saw the grand tradition of these forms drowning in a sea of cheap imitations. Garments with poor print design, graceless forms and inhumane manufacturing.
So she decided to create a line that re-imagines classic resort wear to be worn everyday with modern, contemporary shapes and prints. She named the label Language of the Birds, a term used in esoteric medieval texts.
Our aesthetic brings together sharp New York surface design with Hawaiian infused dress forms. We hope to create a collection that is equal measures tropical and urbane, as appropriate for Bushwick as for Kaka’ako.
We practice ethical production. We are transparent about our sourcing. We want you to know where your clothes come from and who made them. Items are made in the USA. We do as needed multiple small batch production runs to cut down on inventory waste. We believe in the principles of slow fashion.
Fabrics are printed by three different independent textile printers all who use eco-friendly dying processes. Most fabrics are hand-screened in Rhode Island, some are rotary silk-screened in Los Angeles and a few are digitally printed in a fair trade Indian factory. Apparel is Cut & Sewn in New York City. We package with recyclable and compostable materials.
